Nord-Kivu, Virunga National Park
So, here’s a story to sip and think over. These bags are brought from the Mutendero Washing Station, in the Mutendero village on the edge of the Virunga National Park. At an altitude of 1,820m, it’s the highest station of the five owned by the Virunga Coffee Company.
The company not only produces high quality coffees for the speciality market, but works tirelessly to increase premiums for the thousands of smallholder farms in the region. The climate and geography is excellent for speciality arabica production – plentiful rainfall, high altitude, fertile volcanic soils – but in the past has struggled with poverty and a lack of infrastructure.
However, the company has helped by providing hands-on education to farmers and investing in the local infrastructure. This has contributed to improvements with every season, which means higher premiums for farmers.
Just some facts to make each sip taste a little sweeter.
