Some people like scented candles and look at pictures of tropical beach scenes on the laptop. Others prefer to have a sit down and drink Brasil Daterra Sunrise.
Now, it’s not that we’re saying that coffee from our friends at the Daterra Estates in the Minas region of Brasil – where the altitude, flat terrain and mild climate helps grow a beautifully balanced, award-winningly mellow bean – is better for a good ‘ol relax than candles, tea and beach scene, it’s just that it…. definitely is.
Daterra is over 20 years old and it was born to be a high quality and sustainable coffee producer, good to people and the environment. The Estate is located in Cerrado region (Minas Gerais) with the nearest large city being Uberlandia, a three hour drive away. The estate is split over several farms all within 20 minutes’ drive; Tabuoes, Boa Vista, Buriti, Santo Inacio and Santa Antonio, Boa Vista being also being home to the main administration, processing and R & D facilities. Another mill is found at Tabuoes.
The total size of the estate is 6800 ha of which 2800 ha are planted with coffee, the rest of the estate is preserved in its natural state of cerrado savannah. Cerrado Mineiro is a relatively new coffee region with high altitude, flat area, average temperature (19 to 24 Celsius all year) and dry summer, ideal conditions for growing and harvesting coffee.
A center for research in agronomy and coffee varietals, Daterra is divided into mini-farms, where coffee varietals are carefully planted according to the specific soil conditions. Harvest is done mechanically from May to August, although tree are often harvest in stages with tops harvested weeks before the main tree production. While the main output is natural and pulped natural, similar to the main production from the cerrado region, small quantities are fully washed processed. Daterra has been recognised as one of the best coffee producers in the world by Cup of Excellence and Rainforest Alliance Cupping Quality. Several of the World Champion Baristas have used Daterra coffees and the Estate now sponsors the WBC.
We have visited this farm on 3 occasions, the most recent being May 2014 and have a tremendous relationship with the owners, but also the farm managers and staff and have worked together on specific project. We have been working together for over 10 years and will continue to do so for many years into the future.
