Grumpy Mule

Every now and then, the Mule comes across something properly special.

And this one's a bit of a show-off. Bursting with unexpected flavours, it's the kind of coffee that makes you stop mid-sip and go back for another. We couldn't keep it to ourselves.

Why is it special?

It's all in the process. The coffee cherries are hand-picked and naturally processed on Abera's farm, where they're slowly dried on raised African drying beds for 15–18 days.

This careful, unhurried approach helps develop the coffee's wonderfully complex, fruity flavours.

The man behind the beans

Abera Mengesa lives with his family in the village of Halo Bariti, on the eight-hectare farm he inherited from his father.

Coffee growing runs in the family. Abera learned the ropes alongside his father, from planting and tending coffee trees to picking cherries at harvest time.

Today, he continues that tradition on his own farm, carefully managing the growing and processing of his coffee to produce something rather special.
