ATTIA-CHAPATA
“A LIVELY AND FRUIT-DRIVEN COLOMBIAN NATURAL, BALANCING TROPICAL BRIGHTNESS WITHDEEP SWEETNESS AND STRUCTURE."
Grumpy Mule

This is Attia-Chapata, a serious anaerobic natural from the highlands of Anserma, Colombia. Grown at a staggering 2,200 metres, this Castillo lot brings the heavy, tropical depth you rarely see done right.

In the cup, it’s big and boozy. Expect punchy notes of green mango and rum, backed by a dense, coating layer of cacao and toffee. The finish is highly structured, leaving a sticky sweetness on the palate.

The real story is the processing. This lot comes from the Cooperativa de Caficultores de Anserma, a collective of over 2,000 producers. Instead of leaving smallholders to struggle with basic gear, the cooperative runs a centralised wet mill packed with serious tech.

Only the absolute best cherries make the cut. They run the crop through optical sorters to ditch underripe fruit, before a strict 24–36 hour aerobic fermentation. This isn't guesswork; it's precision control in temperature-stable rooms to lock in fruit clarity.

After mechanical drying and 15 days resting to stabilise the crop, the result is a vibrant cup that proves what happens when collective power meets proper quality control.

Serious precision. Proper structure.

Subscription FAQs

What kind of coffee will I get?

Not your average speciality stuff. The Mule sniffs out small-batch beans with big flavour, roasted fresh and full of character.

Each month features a different coffee - a new origin, a new story, a new brew to get stuck into. You’ll travel the coffee belt from Central and South America to Africa and Asia, one mug at a time.

Our coffees are graded 84+ on the SCA scale, meaning clean, complex, high-quality beans that taste a cut above your supermarket shelf. Every batch is traceable and small-scale - often from a single producer or a group of smallholder farmers. Some months you’ll get a single origin, other times a carefully crafted blend - always roasted to bring out its best flavour.

Is it ethically sourced?

Always. The Mule only works with people and organisations that share our values - fair pay, transparency, and respect for the planet.

We’ve built long-term relationships with co-ops and growers who go the extra mile for their communities and the land they farm.

How do I sign up?

Pick your pack size, choose your grind (or choose whole bean), and let the Mule do the rest. We’ll hoof fresh coffee to your door like clockwork.

Can I choose how often I get coffee?

Yep. You’re in charge of how often the Mule trots up to your door - every 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks. Pick what suits your mug habits, and we’ll keep the beans coming right on schedule.

Do I have to create an account?

Yep. Keeps things tidy so you can manage, pause or cancel without chasing us down the paddock.

When will my first bag arrive?

We roast to order and get it out the door sharpish - usually within 1–2 working days. Before you know it, your kitchen will smell like the Mule’s roastery.

Is delivery really free?

It is. And letterbox-friendly, so no waiting around for the postie.

Can I change my delivery address?

Course you can. Just log in and update your details before the next roast heads your way.

What’s happening to my Cafédirect subscription?

Cafédirect and Grumpy Mule are sister brands, with the same people behind the scenes.

We’re moving Cafédirect subscriptions to Grumpy Mule so you can enjoy better packaging, more flexibility, and the same excellent coffee you already know.

Your subscription will move automatically by 26 January 2026, and your deliveries will continue as normal.

You’ll be able to access your new account on this website using the same email address as your Cafédirect account. Just head to the account icon in the top header to get started.

Please contact us if you have any questions about this at orders@grumpymule.co.uk

On what date on the month does that coffee change?

The 1st of each month brings a brand-new coffee to your subscription.

When do I get charged?

You’ll be charged when you place your first order, and then again on each renewal date after that. Simple as that - no sneaky extras or surprises.

Can I skip a delivery?

Absolutely. Going on holiday? Cupboards full? Skip a round - the Mule won’t sulk.

Can I pause or cancel anytime?

Deffo. You’ve got the reins. Pause, cancel or start again whenever you fancy.

Can I change the coffee I get?

Each month the Mule picks one cracking coffee for everyone - no choosing, just great brews discovered for you.

How do I update my grind preference?

Easy. Log in to your account, pick your grind, and the Mule will take it from there. Need a hand choosing?

• Fine: Espresso machine
• Medium: V60, Clever Drip, Stovetop, AeroPress
• Coarse: Cafetière or cold brew

Whatever your brew method, there’s a grind that fits best.

How long should I rest my coffee before brewing?

Coffee resting refers to the time freshly roasted beans need to reach a stable state before brewing. Straight after roasting, beans release CO₂, which can get in the way of proper extraction and mute the flavours.

As a rule of hoof:
• Filter brews (like V60, Clever Drip, AeroPress or cafetière) are usually ready after 3–7 days.
• Espresso prefers a bit longer - around 7–14 days.

Darker roasts settle faster. Lighter ones take their time. A little patience pays off - once rested, the flavours even out, the sweetness shines, and the taste comes through just right.

These are just guidelines - every coffee’s got its own personality. Some are friendly and open up right away. Others are a bit more stubborn about showing their best side. Timing (and your own taste) might vary, so be patient, be curious, and have a bit of fun experimenting.

Can I use discount codes on subscriptions?

Some work, some don’t - depends on the offer. We’ll tell you up front if it applies.

Can I give the Mule Subscription as a gift?

Not quite yet - but we’re working on it. For now, you can send coffee to a different address (just note the emails and account details will still come to you).
Whoever’s on the receiving end will think you’re a legend either way.

Why is my Mule’s Pick the same as last time?

On a 4-week cycle, deliveries don’t line up exactly with calendar months. That means there’s occasionally a crossover where the same Pick lands twice.

You can skip or reschedule your next delivery whenever you like in your account.
